About this map

City pins · US AQI

Each city uses the same compact label and 3D pin. The number, color and pin height represent its PM2.5 US AQI: higher pollution creates a taller pin. Pins stay anchored to their geographic locations and labels keep a fixed side, with no selection highlight. Hiding haze keeps the city pins visible. Colors follow IQAir's US AQI categories. Values come from the CAMS / Open-Meteo PM2.5 sub-index, based on a rolling 24-hour average; they are not IQAir station readings or Singapore PSI. Missing values appear in gray with a dash.

Haze height

Haze color and height visualize surface PM2.5 concentration. Height is exaggerated for display; the data do not provide a measured vertical smoke profile or altitude. Drag to rotate, right-drag to pan, and scroll to zoom. Use Auto-rotate in the map toolbar for a slow 360° display. Click again to stop; manually moving, zooming or resetting the view also stops rotation. Auto-rotate works independently of timeline playback.

Latest model

This map uses the CAMS global atmospheric composition model via Open-Meteo, with a native spatial resolution of approximately 45 km and updates typically every 12 hours. It samples 90 regional points at 3° intervals and 10 separate cities. Hourly data and smooth haze shapes are model-based visualizations, not satellite images or measured plume boundaries. Unsampled areas do not imply clean air.

Past and next 7 days

The timeline spans seven days before and after the current hour. Historical data are model estimates. CAMS global forecasts extend approximately five days from the model run, so the full next seven days may not be available. Gray sections have no data; missing periods are never filled or extrapolated. All displayed times use Singapore time (UTC+8).

Playback

Default 1× speed advances one model hour every 0.35 seconds. Use 2× or 5× to accelerate; click the selected speed again to return to 1×. Haze and pin heights blend between adjacent valid hours, while numbers retain whole-hour model values. Smooth transitions do not add observations or bridge missing periods. Use the down arrow to collapse the controls into a bottom progress line. Click the line to expand them; playback continues throughout.

Simulation and snapshots

Demo mode uses fictional sources and dispersion, not actual fires or winds. Its AQI is derived from a 24-hour average of simulated concentrations. If the live request fails, the map uses a clearly dated model snapshot when available; otherwise it explicitly stays in simulation mode.

Map and colors

Geography comes from Natural Earth. The light-blue water, pale land and minimal controls take visual inspiration from Apple Maps; this is not Apple map data. PM2.5 has many sources, so this visualization cannot attribute pollution to a particular fire.
